Chapter Six

“Why are you here?” Alden snapped, following Oliver into the drawing room.

Martin stood before the fireplace, arms crossed. He’d barely looked at Oliver, but faced Alden’s abrupt question squarely. “You were out of line,” he stated evenly. “There was nothing illicit going on. We were strolling in a public park, for the love of God. She was simply delivering a letter from Anthony.”

Oliver looked to Alden. “Where exactly did you find Fiona?” he asked Alden, his heart beating slightly faster. “And what did you do?”

Alden snorted. “She was strolling in St. James’s Park with him, and he was being a prick. I had every right to interfere.”

“She was delivering confidential papers to the Foreign Office, you arsehole. To Me. From Anthony. Because of your totally inexplicable behavior last night at Palmerston House and my idiot brother, I couldn’t simply call here this morning and pick them up from the safety of Lennox’s drawing room,” Martin exploded, slamming his fist down on the back of a chair.

Oliver straightened, suddenly understanding. He knew well what Martin did at the Foreign Office. Once upon a time, he’d been slated to run Martin’s library, before Morpeth had gone to their father complaining of Oliver’s relationship with Alden. Before his father had issued the ultimatum that had required no thought from Oliver at all.

“Then why was she trying to break free of your grip?” Alden challenged, moving closer to Martin.

Alarmed, Oliver stepped between the two men, his eyes narrowed. “You’re putting her in danger?” he asked softly. “Isn’t that what dispatch boxes and the official courier service are for, brother?”

Martin blanched and shifted uncomfortably. “The occasional dispatch box is perfectly acceptable, given Anthony held an important post in the FO, but if they are frequent or rushed, people might begin to wonder,” he eventually conceded.

Alden growled. “So what were you arguing about?” he repeated.

Martin sighed. “I hardly think that’s any of your business, Swenson,” he objected.

“Fiona is my business,” Alden grated out an answer.

Oliver looked at him nervously. He hadn’t seen Alden so angry since the night… Well, since that night years earlier that Oliver didn’t wish to remember.

Martin flinched. “With Lennox out of town, perhaps. But there’s nothing nefarious to concern yourself.” He shrugged. “We sometimes disagree. I am supposed to escort her to that hieroglyphics lecture tomorrow night at the Society of Antiquaries. It’s fairly widely known that Lennox disapproves of her going about Somerset House without a gentleman escort. And Anthony didn’t want her going alone. But Fiona listens even less often than Oliver did as a youth, even when it’s in her best interests. Most of those clever gents are in awe of her, but there are a few of them who strike me as conniving and clever, rather than intelligent, and I’ve seen the looks she gets when her back is turned, even if she is oblivious to their interest. Naturally, Fiona was trying to refuse my escort, thinking no one would harass her if she went alone, not with Lennox out of town.
